Affecting factors on English teaching in Iran

Abstract

This study is about the factual problems of teaching English as a foreign language in Iran, and some factors that have direct affect on this process. There are some difficulties, which English language teachers are encountered with, among which three cases are considered to be the most important and influential in this area: The text books, the teachers’ knowledge, and the manner of examination. Each one is discussed briefly later. The purpose of this study is to detect and reveal some English language teaching problems in Iran, in order to draw the authorities’ attention to these points, so that they may solve the problems in near future. As a result the aims of English teaching will progress more quickly. The English text books of guidance school and high school and the structure of final examinations is considered in this study. The results revealed that there should be more attention to the description of English language teaching purposes in Iran. Also it showed the bitter fact that in most cases, the unskilled teachers, improper text books, and incorrect structure of tests causes the process of English language teaching to be in trouble and critical in Iran. In order to overcome these problems and difficulties, the authorities, directors, and university professors should cooperatively design an ideal program or programs.
